Greetings

Open Scripture          1 Kings 3:5–12

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

Call to Worship  (responsive)

God offers more than we know to ask for.

Give us, O Lord, a listening heart.

The unfolding of your word gives light.

Give us, O Lord, an understanding mind.

The kingdom of heaven is near - hidden like treasure, growing like a seed.

Open our eyes to see it, and our hearts to receive it. Let us worship God.

Hymn of Welcome                  O Worship the King, All Glories Above!

Psalm 119:129–136

Opening Prayer (unison)

God of wisdom and light, you meet us in the ordinary places, in fields and kitchens, in the quiet of our questions, and you offer us more than we know to ask for. Like Solomon, we come needing a listening heart. Like the psalmist, we hunger for your word to light our way. Like the ones who found the treasure and the pearl, teach us to recognize the surpassing worth of your kingdom when it appears among us. Open our eyes to what we so often walk past. Open our ears to your still, small voice. Open our hearts to be changed by what we hear. Gather us now as your people, and by your Spirit, make us wise. Amen.

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession (unison)

Merciful God, you offer us treasure, and we settle for less. You place your kingdom within our reach, and we hurry past it, distracted and unseeing. We ask for the wrong things. We cling to the old out of fear, or chase the new without wisdom. We know what is precious, yet we are slow to give ourselves to it. Forgive us, we pray. Grant us a listening heart, and turn us again toward what truly matters; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Assurance of Pardon

Gloria Patri

Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Prayer for Illumination (unison)

Living God, the unfolding of your word gives light. As we open the Scriptures, open us. Give us a listening heart to receive your word, and the courage to live it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gospel Reading                     Matthew 13:31–33, 44–52

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

Sermon                                     Listening                                Rev. Tony DeLucia

Hymn of Response

Affirmation of Faith                 The Barmen Declaration, 8.14-8.16

As Jesus Christ is God’s assurance of the forgiveness of all our sins, so in the same way and with the same seriousness is he also God’s mighty claim upon our whole life. Through him befalls us a joyful deliverance from the godless fetters of this world for a free, grateful service to his creatures. We reject the false doctrine, as though there were areas of our life in which we would not belong to Jesus Christ, but to other lords — areas in which we would not need justification and sanctification through him.

Call for the Offering

Doxology

Prayer of Dedication (unison)

Generous God, you have shown us the infinite worth of your kingdom, and you have taught us where our treasure lies. Receive these gifts, small seeds placed into your hands. Bless them and multiply them, that through them your kingdom may grow. Take our gifts, and take our lives, and use them for your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
