Prelude
Greetings
Open Scripture Numbers 21:4b-9 (NRSVUE)
The Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God.
Call to Worship
From Mount Hor they set out, but the people became impatient on the way.
We too have grown weary, O Lord. The wilderness is long, and the manna tastes like dust.
The Lord sent serpents among the people, and the people cried out, "We have sinned."
We too have spoken against you. We too have turned our faces from your provision.
And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.
His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory!
Let us worship the God who turns death into life.
Let us worship God.
Hymn of Welcome Onward, Christian Soldiers
Psalm 98:1-5 (NRSVUE)
Opening Prayer (unison)
O God of the wilderness and the cross, we come to you with the venom of complaint on our tongues, the bite of despair in our bones, the fever of self-righteousness clouding our sight. We have spoken against your mercy. We have called your daily bread miserable food. And still you set a pole in the ground and lift up what we most fear so that whoever looks may live. Give us the simple courage to look. Open our eyes to the healing you provide, and lift our voices with all the earth to sing the new song of your marvelous victory. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Call to Confession
Prayer of Confession (unison)
God of judgment and healing, we confess that we have poisoned our own well. We have complained about your generosity. We have looked at our neighbor with the eyes of a serpent. We have called good evil and evil good. We have not looked at the pole you set before us, because looking would mean admitting we are dying. Forgive our stubbornness, O Lord. Loosen our clenched jaws. Turn our faces toward the One who was lifted up for us. We ask in His name. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
Gloria Patri
Passing of the Peace
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.
Prayer for Illumination (unison)
Lord Jesus, you were lifted up so that we might look and live. As we open the Scriptures, open our eyes. As we hear your word, heal our hearts. And as we sing your praise, make us glad in your victory. Amen.

Hymn of Response I Then Shall Live
Affirmation of Faith Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Invitation To The Offering
Doxology
Prayer of Dedication (unison)
God of the cross and the empty tomb, receive these gifts and the givers along with them. What we offer is small, but your mercy is vast. Bless these gifts to the healing of the world, that those who have been bitten by despair might look upon your love and live. Amen.
