Daily Lectionary Readings for Wednesday, May 27, 2026
"Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife." — Proverbs 17:1
"A friend loves at all times, and kinsfolk are born to share adversity." — Proverbs 17:17
"And pointing to his disciples, he said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers!'" — Matthew 12:49
When we think about community and family, it’s easy to get caught up in the highlight reel, the grand celebrations, the perfectly orchestrated holidays, the "feasting." Yet, our readings today bring us back to the grounded, unglamorous, and deeply beautiful reality of what it actually means to belong to one another.
In a world that feels increasingly loud, anxious, and fractured by endless news cycles and social strife, creating spaces of quiet belonging is a radical act of love. Authentic relationship doesn't always look like a celebration. More often, it looks like showing up for the adversity. It looks like the friend who sits quietly with you in a waiting room, or the chosen family who helps carry the weight of your grief. Sometimes, it looks like the everyday people who do the tedious, behind-the-scenes work, from organizing files and navigating the administrative red tape of letters to paying the bills, just to ensure there is a safe, sustainable space for others to land.
Jesus radically expands our definition of family in today's Gospel. He looks at the people gathered around him, listening and striving to do God's will, and claims them as his closest kin. He calls us to a kinship not based on bloodlines or perfect behavior, but on a shared commitment to God’s work of healing and justice. It is this same God who, as Psalm 147 reminds us, "heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds."
The family we choose, and the family God calls us to be, is built in the quiet moments of showing up. It’s built when we refuse to let each other walk through adversity alone, choosing the peace of a "dry morsel" over the noise of the world.
Prayer:
God of the quiet moments, thank you for the friends and chosen family who walk with us through adversity. Help us to be a safe place for others, prioritizing gentle presence over loud perfection. Bind up the brokenhearted in our communities today, and give us the strength to do the quiet, necessary work of love. Amen.
